With a 3-1 start, I got my hopes up that the Seattle Seahawks would prove that their 2007 resurgance was no fluke. This past Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, they had the chance to eliminate their 2005 Super Bowl demons and beat the Steelers at home.

What happened? The Seahawks got thumped 21-0 after lackluster performances by Matt Hasselbeck and Shaun Alexander. This was no team loss – I put the blame of the loss squarely on the shoulders of head coach Mike Holmgren, Hasselbeck, and Alexander. How does a West Coast offense get shut out? Also, the Cardinals beat the Steelers last week by shutting down their running game. Are you telling me the Cardinals’ defense is better than the Seahawks’ defense?

Keep in mind, the Steelers were playing without their two starting wide receivers, including Hines Ward. They were even without All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu. The Seahawks had the advantage on their side and they blew it. The Seahawks first loss of 2007 was hard to swallow (a botched Hasselbeck/Alexander hand-off exchange), but this takes the cake. Regardless if the Seahawks make the playoffs this season, I don’t see them getting very far. If anything, it looks like another 1st round exit.

The Holmgren era should end after this year, and the Seahawks’ management needs to find a new head coach and start anew. While they are at it, they should trade both Hasselbeck and Alexander.
